Living History: Diane Eickhoff as Clarina Nichols

An historical video treat from the archives! Local author Diane Eickhoff visited our West Wyandotte Branch to give a presentation on the 19th century women’s rights crusader Clarina Nichols. Eickhoff is the author of Revolutionary Heart: The Life of Clarina Nichols and the Pioneering Crusade for Women’s Rights and the audiobook Frontier Freedom Fighter: The Story of Clarina Nichols. During her presentation, Eickhoff actually interacts with the audience as Clarina Nichols- she has developed a compelling monologue comprised mainly of Nichols’ journal entries, which she delivers while in full period costume.

A Wyandotte County resident from 1856 to 1871, Clarina Nichols did much to advance the cause of human rights in Kansas. In addition to working as associate editor of the Quindaro Chindowan, an abolitionist newspaper, Nichols also traveled throughout the territory giving lectures on equality. She attended the Wyandotte Convention in 1859 and influenced the resulting Constitution in the areas of women’s rights in child custody and married women’s property rights.

Since this taping, Revolutionary Heart has been honored with the ForeWord Magazine 2007 Book of the Year Award, Willa Cather Literary Award, and a Kansas Notable Book selection. This video is a short sampling from the half-hour monologue Eickhoff presented in 2006. Music by Jeffrey Ruckman.

An exciting update- I just finished recording the audio tour for the F.L. Schlagle Library. Jon McGrath, who works as an education specialist at Schlagle, has spent the past few months researching, writing and refining a really amazing script for the tour. Upon completion, library patrons will be able to check out mp3 players loaded with the tour tracks which will guide them around the library, nature trail, and surrounding grounds. The tour is packed with interesting information about everything from the library’s history to fascinating facts on the variety of flora and fauna found at the lake.

I’m planning on posting a sample of the tour here when it’s finished, hopefully by the end of the month. Then plan on making a visit to our library on the lake to take the tour yourself!

Kansas Free-Stater Abelard Guthrie.

Born near Dayton, Ohio in 1814, Guthrie became a key founder of the historic town of Quindaro. The town was named in honor of his wife, Quindaro Nancy Brown. Guthrie became an adopted member of the Wyandot Indian tribe upon his marriage to Miss Brown, who at the time was said to be the most beautiful woman in the Wyandot Nation. Guthrie would also serve as the first Congressional Delegate from Nebraska Territory after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.
