We’re excited to share the first of our “Know Your Library Staff” profiles! Over the coming months a variety of KCKPL staff members will be featured here on the Media Blog to give you some idea of just how many different kinds of people it takes to run a library system. Some of these faces may be familiar to you since they work with the public every day, but many of them you’ve probably never seen! In addition to the friendly folks you encounter at our branches, there are many people hard at work behind the scenes making sure that our system runs smoothly. From catalogers and custodial staff to administrators and computer services technicians, everyone here at the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is working to provide you with quality materials and services! This is where you can find out a little bit more about who they are and what they do. Read on to meet Mr. Mills…
NAME: David B. Mills
JOB TITLE: Adult Services Librarian/Computer Lab Supervisor
TIME WITH KCKPL: 8 years this September
In addition to providing assistance at the reference desk, Dave oversees West Wyandotte’s computer lab and teaches a variety of computer classes to the public. The opportunity to provide quality service to the public is one of the things Dave enjoys most about his job. He also enjoys “the gadgets”.
Dave says: “During the last NEKLS (Northeast Kansas Library System) Tech Day, I was introduced to Apple’s iPhone as well as the Nintendo Wii game system. Fun stuff.”
On what’s great about his co-workers: “Everyone I work with comes from diversified backgrounds and disciplines, and with that diversity comes a variety of different approaches as it applies to customer services. I think the public appreciates this, too.”
And when he’s not hard at work…
HOBBIES/INTERESTS: Exploring antique shops, attending sporting events on both college and professional levels, and collecting Royal Doulton Toby mugs (I have a collection of nearly 50!).
FAVORITE BOOKS: Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia- especially The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever (written by my cousin, Stephen R. Donaldson). Recently, I’ve enjoyed reading Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. And while I walk, I listen to a lot of Louis L’Amour audio books.
FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KCK: On the west end of town: Cheeseburger in Paradise. Toward downtown: Fritz’s.
