Back to School for Adults: the Way to a Better Future

adult studentWant a better job? Dream of a career change? Need to retrain? I’ve known Caryl Neinas since we both worked for a recreational program for active senior adults. Now she works for the Educational Opportunity Center of Kansas City, Kansas and is focused on helping adults in Wyandotte County, Kansas, achieve more through education. She’s partnering with the Library to offer a free informational seminar, Back to School for Adults: the Way to a Better Future, at West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd. St., Kansas City, Kansas, on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m.; and again on Thursday, April 30, at 10 a.m.

Maybe the next step for you in continuing education is getting a GED. Perhaps it’s figuring out how to combine your skills, dreams and education goals to define a new career path. Learn about the $83 billion in federal grants available – in addition to scholarships and loans – that can get you moving down the path. Gain an advantage in today’s labor market.

If you don’t already have a Kansas City, Kansas Public Library card, apply for one while you’re at the seminar. Your library card puts a wealth of information at your fingertips. Library staff can assist you with finding information on a wide variety of education and career topics. Bring your laptop to access the Internet and the Library’s online resources through free WiFi. Or, use one of the public access computers to research careers, hunt for a job, or complete job applications online.

Bring a friend who could benefit from continuing education or new computer skills. The Library offers free computer classes which start with the very basics of using a computer, mouse and keyboard. There are also classes on e-mail; the Internet; eBay; Miscroft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint.

Greg Mortenson at KCKPL

Greg Mortenson, humanitarian and author of the New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace… One School at a Time, made a visit to KCKPL early last month. He spoke at a YWCA luncheon and at Wyandotte High School.

Mortenson’s younger sister, Christa, passed away in 1992. To honor her memory, Mortenson set out to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain. After failing to reach the summit, Mortenson spent some time recovering in the village of Korphe. He saw children writing in the sticks with dirt, such was their hunger for education. He made a promise to help build a school.

Out of that promise grew the Central Asia Institute, a non-profit organization committed to building and supporting community-based education programs in the the mountain regions of Central Asia. CAI is especially focused on providing education to women and girls. To date over 60 CAI schools have been constructed in Pakistan and Afghanistan, providing education to over 25,000 children, 14,000 of whom are female.

Greg sat for an interview with KCKPL-ers Rita Miziorko and Steve Oakes to discuss current CAI projects, rumors of a follow-up to Three Cups of Tea, and why he had to turn down Steven Spielberg.

A group of students from Sumner High School attended Greg’s lecture at Wyandotte High School. Here five Sumner students talk about Greg and Three Cups of Tea.
