It’s the middle of your work week, and you’re tired of the A/C making your office feel like it’s refrigerated, and traffic noise wafting up from the street through the permanently closed windows (or maybe that’s just me). If you’ve just gotta get out and enjoy the sun, we’ve got the perfect way to spend your lunch break! Head over to the courtyard outside the entrance of Kansas City, Kansas Public Library’s Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., this Wednesday, June 10, at noon. Our guest performers will be Ernest James and Zydeco Jubilee.

(Here’s a picture from last year’s concert series.)
Brown bag it and enjoy lunch while you listen, or grab a bite from Cafe 625, the library cafe operated by Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Nutritional Services. Wednesday’s special is half a dozen hot wings/ranch dressing and a canned soda for $4.25.
The second concert in the 2009 Lyrics @ the Library summer concert series will be held Wednesday, July 8, at noon, with a performance by the Rich Wheeler Quartet.
Both concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Main Library at (913) 551-3280.

The Libraries of Greater Kansas City (Kansas City Kansas, Kansas City, North Kansas City, Olathe, Johnson County and Mid-Continent public libraries) are kicking off The Big Read on Saturday, April 4, 1-3 p.m., at The Legends at Village West (I-435 and I-70 in Kansas City, Kansas). We’ll have ’60s music from the Krazy Kats, and Books.A.Million is having a book fair. A portion of the proceeds from the book fair will go to promote literacy in Kansas City. This year’s The Big Read selection is Old School, by Tobias Wolff. Participating libraries will have information available about special Old School programs. Find out where to go to join a community discussion about the novel after you’ve read it. Listen in each weekday at 11:30 a.m. as KKFI 90.1 FM broadcasts Old School read aloud by local celebrities and dignitaries beginning April 6. For all the information about The Big Read: Old School, visit us here.
Ed. note: The A/V Club will feature semi-regular rants, reviews and recommendations by authentic KCKPL Audiovisual staff members. Enjoy.
REVIEW: Boris – Smile (2008) – Southern Lord Records

Boris is a hard rock/space rock/heavy metal/drone outfit from Japan. Their 2008 album, Smile, pulls liberally from this vast pool of stylistic approaches, resulting in an overwhelmingly successful effort. You don’t need to understand Japanese to connect with the passionate lyrical deliveries on songs like the album’s opener, “Flower Sun Rain”.
For those trying to rock a little harder, tracks like “Statement” display Boris’ ability to hash out high-octane super rock ala your favorite late seventies British rock band… With a few twists! All the while tracks like “My Neighbor Satan” and the untitled album closer see Boris in full outer-limits exploration dream-mode. Be warned, though- a few of the songs get a little lengthy. Not a disappointing listen for those who are game.
Contemporary outer-space metal from the land of the rising sun!
