As winter approaches, Wyandotte County Lake Park is transformed by the variety and vast numbers of birds that stop by during their yearly migration south. Multiple species of waterfowl from the common Mallard Duck to the beautiful Bufflehead and Goldeneye use the lake as a place to rest and refuel before continuing on south. In the early morning thousands of Snow Geese and Canada Geese greet the day with their squawking chorus. As the lake ices over many birds move on while others are just arriving. On any given winter day Bald Eagles can be found at the lake. This year they started showing up about the middle of December and have been seen or heard nearly every day.
On January 17th the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library will be hosting the eighth annual Eagle Day. Operation Wildlife will be on site with live birds of prey including Moose, a non-releasable Bald Eagle. Check the library’s calendar of events for more information!
